Simulators
The founder and CEO of Humanikin, Dr. Mark Richards, developed a series of physical thermal simulators of the human body (body parts and a whole-body manikin nicknamed SAM) over more than 10 years R&D at Empa. These sweating thermal manikins simulate not only the heat production but also the moisture production of the human. They are used to test the insulation and breathability of clothing as well as comfort properties of seats, bedding, buildings and vehicles.
Although not a substitute for human trials, thermal manikins provide repetitive results and are much more economic. The most advanced manikins sweat just like an average human does, so realistic results are now possible.
